Muscular dystrophy, in simple terms, is a disease of the muscles. It is a progressive degenerative disease. It is due to malfunctioning of the muscles. This disease affects people of all ages. There are many people worldwide affected by this genetically inherited disease. It is very unfortunate that muscular dystrophy impairs the normal day-to-day activities over time. It is the slow progressive degeneration of the muscles which impair the normal activities such as standing, walking, sitting etc. The root cause of this disease is fault in the genes for muscle proteins. The improper protein synthesis weakens the muscle and overtime loss the ability to do activities involving movements. Many people show symptoms of this disease in childhood stage whereas in some others they appear in their adulthood. Many people with mild symptoms can be managed with treatment whereas others may have disabling conditions. There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. However the progression of the disease and management of the symptoms can be slowed down by appropriate therapeutic treatment.
